Reading

I mentioned last week to our friend Asa Faith that I had been reading books about writing. "I think I have one you might enjoy," she said.

Later she sent a text saying she had some books for me. Jilda felt well enough today so we went down to fetch them.

One of the books in the pile was F. Scott Fitzgerald on writing. Flipping through the first few pages put a smile on my face. It looks like another good one.

Jilda also shared an interview by Oprah with  Paulo Coelho who wrote The Alchemist. I've read that little parable more times that I can count. Jilda has read it more than me. It always gives me hope.

Pulling the dog eared book from our shelves, I put it on the pile to read again.

Jilda has read all her life, but I wasn't a reader at first. I high school, I only read required reading. I wasn't much better the first few years of college, but somewhere along the way something changed.

These days my desk has a stack of "currently reading" books, and I've listened to 480 books on Audible. I couldn't tell you how many others I borrowed from the library.

Reading a good book has a way of lifting my spirits when I'm feeling down.

So, are you reading any good books? Care to venture a guess of how many books you've read in your life?

  1. I have mentioned before that I started reading late. Once I did I had found a new love. I just finished Grisham's 'RAcketeer'. I have read everything he has written, but felt he had been off his stride, but he found it in the Racketeer. We took a volunteer job in Lapanto, ARK, I had never heard of the place. Small, small town. Driving into town saw a sign, John Grisham's "painted House' was filmed here. The job was fun along with seeing and touring the set and old house. One of those really lucky breaks, that brings a smile...
    Enjoyed the visit as always...

    1. I've read most of Grisham's books too. I read Painted House. I think the last thing I read B y him was Playing For Pizza. He tells a great story.
Have you read any James Lee Burke books? I love his stuff too.

Have you read any of David Baldacci's books--especially the Camel Club series? They're mysteries with a political twist. They're great!!

  3. "Life 101" has been included in our A Sunday Drive for this week. Be assured that we hope this helps to point even more new visitors in your direction.

  4. I can't tell you how many books I've read. I tried to make a list for my son so he can read what I read and scared myself lol
I have always been a big time reader. Stick me in a library and I could live and die there and be a happy woman. Today with internet there is so much to read and watch . Maybe this is why finally I found my voice and what seems hard for some, is so easy for me to see through. I encourage people to read and relaxing behind a paper book with a barrel of apples beside you, is easier on the eyes and brain than on an electronic machine. Makes your day. Really.

  5. I've always been a reader. At work you'll find my nose in a book or my kindle and the standard question is "what cha reading now?" Jack and I wandered into the bookstore yesterday and I bought a book titled "Complications, a surgeon's notes on an imperfect science". Jack just shook his head and said "seriously? don't you get enough of that at work?" Guess not! I bought a sign to hang on a wall that says it all for me.."I can go anywhere with a good book"

  6. Hi There. I was on a first name base with our librarian when I was a child. And many times I will bring books home and after reading a couple chapters I will tell my Hubby, I read this one before...I like to find books that are old and to read them that usually did not have the new twist, but a trustworthy mystery or deep down inside feel good book!
I wish I had written down all the titles of the books, even as a child ;o)

  8. I don't even think I can guess how many books I have read, I started reading at the age of 7 and I was always reading something until a few years ago... I miss reading, a lot. I need to find a good book :)

  9. I have read piles of books in my life and I could read before I started school. I haven't been reading as much lately because I have too many other interests and work but I have a whole wall full of books. I still buy some with the hope that some day I'll read them all. I have lots of Depak Chopra's books and some I haven't even red yet. I buy lots of second hand books as they are more affordable. A good book has to have my full attention in the first few pages to keep me interested. I have so many hobbies that keeps me preoccupied.

    Happy reading.
    JB

  10. After teaching English literature and composition for all those years, not to mention being an avid reader since I first held a book in my hands, I wouldn't even be able to guess how many I've read. But I do know this...I love reading and will probably die with a book in my hands!
