Words

I was taught at a very young age, that being a braggart was right up there with being a coward, or a snitch. Only insecure people felt the need to brag on themselves.

As a result, when I got older and faced situations in which I had to describe my positive attributes (job resumes, interviews, and Linkedin profiles), I struggled with the words.

It occurred to me that my folks were right in one respect, that bragging on ones self can be viewed as a flaw in the personality. But there are times in which it not only OK to toot your own horn, but it's the right thing to do.

I'm working on updating my Vision Board for the new year (I know I'm running a little behind), but there are personal traits that I would like to reinforce.

Last years board, I simply typed the words out in my word processor, printed them in a large font, and used them on my board.

But today when I was perusing the web, I came upon a term I'd never heard before. It's called Word Cloud.

There are websites that specialize in Word Clouds. You type in the words, and the software creates a graphic Word Cloud.

At the risk of bragging, below is my Word Cloud.

  1. Funny you should mention the braggart. I think many parents taught that, but also many young'uns didn't learn. It is hard to brag on yourself, but you are right, there are times you must...Never heard of a Word cloud, but that is neat.

  3. It is so true that we were taught not to brag. The problem is that recognizing positive traits in yourself is not bragging and we were not taught this. Bragging is trying to force someone to believe that your positive traits are bigger and bolder than they really are. I'm glad you are able to show your strengths now.

  5. I love your Word Cloud, and it's most fitting for you. I am also in a time of life where I must "brag" on myself in order to advance in a positive way. I will check out this new thing, and make a Cloud for me!

  10. I was taught not to brag too and had a hard time accepting compliments until I realized that I didn't created myself. I was a work of art created by God and I was only trying to use the gifts he has given me. Now I'm so thankful for all my gifts and good attribute and still ashamed of my bad traits.

I heard about Word Cloud but wasn't curious enough to check it out. I thought it was a place to store extra bits of information. Nice heart with great qualities.

  11. We really are taught that, aren't we Rick? That talking of our positive traits is bragging. I think it's merely affirming what we're proud of about ourselves. There's nothing wrong with it, so long as it doesn't venture into cockiness. I think that's sometimes the difficult balance to strike because we are so fearful of coming across that way.

  12. I've had to learn to "brag" over the years so I can get jobs. Sometimes the bragging is a joke. It's possible that you've already guessed this, but I'm not the queen of grammar.

    Love,
    Janie
