Hay is for chickens

We started planting our winter garden this morning. Beets, kale, turnips, and lettuce. We also planted a few hills of pumpkins. I'm thinking it might be a little late for pumpkins, but we'll see.

I weeded the blueberry bushes and spread pine-bark mulch around the roots.

The tropical storm Erika is headed into the Gulf of Mexico. The sun warmed the morning up nicely, but the radar showed these waves heading toward us. I wasn't sure how long the rain would last so I decided to cut the grass.

I bought a few bales of hay to spread in our chicken pen to freshen up their space. I unloaded one bale in the ergonomic wheelbarrow to haul down to the pen. The sun seemed to be spotlighting the hay so I snapped a quick picture.

By lunchtime most of my work was done. So I spent the afternoon reading. I hope your day has been as enjoyable as mine.

  4. Some of your entries bring back memories better forgotten. I called my mama to brag on my garden in Missouri, 1959.. "Tomatoes are doing good, I have 80 tomato plants from seeds"
    mama, "WHAT?"
    "My turnips are like Carrots."
"Son this is June, Turnips are for the fall."
    "OH!"
"When you do them in the fall, thin them son."
    "Yes ma'am."
I hope your fall garden is great. I like the light on the picture.

  5. Yes, it does sound like a lovely day. We're down here in Port Canaveral working our way around hurricanes this week, next week, and last. It's not too bad if you don't mind some rocking and rolling of the ship from the outer bands. It's fun to see different ports, too. There is always a bright side.

  8. In winter we have lots of snow and My thoughts turns to things we do inside.

That bale of hay looks like is having a siesta in the sun. Great photo.
I hope that you are not affected by the hurricane. Stay safe.
