Violets

There are African Violets in our kitchen window. Jilda got one for her birthday earlier this year from our niece Jayna, and one she got several years ago from her sister Nell. But the one below she got from her mother over 15 years ago. Jilda had taken her mom to the local grocery store where they saw the violets on sale for 99 cents. Ruby told her, "I'll buy you an African Violet. Everyone needs one."

Jilda has nursed the plant like an infant with the cholic. Some years it pouts, but some years it shows out.

This morning the sun came out for a brief visit and kissed the violets.  I happened to be lucky enough to be a witness.

  1. I used to have a few. I hadn't thought about them in a while. Maybe it's time to get another. They are such handsome, long lived plants. Those fresh blooms in a pot on the windowsill sure bring a lot of pleasure.

  2. I used to have some violets that I started from leaf cuttings. Violets are so pretty when in bloom. 15 years is a long time.
Interesting and beautiful image but nothing can take the place of the real picture of an African Violet plant for me. I'm just too old fashion. hehe

    Have a great day.

  6. My mother who could grow anything loved African violets. Unfortunately they were the one plant she could not nurture. They died on her watch every time.

  7. You caught them at a beautiful moment! I'm not good with indoor plants but give me some outdoor dirt and I can hold my own! It's a sweet memory for Jilda to see the beautiful violets and remember her Mother....I'm glad she has that special connection.

  8. Beautiful photo of the violets. My grandmother always used to have a couple pots of African violets in her windowsill. I try to keep a couple plants alive indoors once in awhile, but unfortunately for plants, being in my tender loving care is more like receiving a death warrant indoors.

  10. How wonderful that she can nurture these little jewels of the flower world. Mine has shriveled up and looks like a perfect flower for Morticia Adams
