Life is good

I ordered a copy of Rick Bragg's latest book, My Southern Journey today. He's an Alabama boy that's done well with words. If you've never read any of his work, you should check out It's All Over But The Shoutin' or Ava's Man. He is the essence of a southern writer.

While I don't try to write like him, I am inspired by his work. When he tells a story, he puts you there with words and imagery. He can tell a story.

This evening, Samantha and Jordan, as well as her parents Ricky and Deb, came over to walk with us. We all had about the same number of steps on our fitbits, so just after lunch we ambled for almost an hour through the fields and hollows here on the farm.

Afterwards, I built a fire in the firepit. We were out of chocolate bars so s'mores were off the menu, but we did have marshmallows as big as pillows. For my birthday in January, Jilda bought me a set of tools made for roasting things over an open fire. We had a chance to trial them this evening.

By the time we were through, Jordan had marshmallows in his hair. His mom was a little concerned, but when I Googled how to get the stuff out of hair, it said warm water would do the trick.

The temps are dropping dramatically tonight, but we got all our plants into the house. Life is good. I hope your weekend is a good one too.

  2. I know that boys will be boys, but I would love to know how Jordan got marshmallows in his hair.

  4. I've read Redbirds (Rick Bragg) a few years back. So many books, so little time.

  5. That Jordan is growing! A fire pit! That was the first thing we noticed about this Campground out in the sticks, as we drove in we smelled the fires!
Rick Bragg sounds good. I will look into his word.

  6. Grilled marshmallows are one of my favorite treats. And I could eat Jordan's hot dog without thinking twice.

  7. Jordan is adorable.. probably cuter still with gooey hair.

At the risk of being a downer, I always feel like I need to share this caution. Please make sure the kids and everyone takes careful bites of them only.. and never pop the whole thing in their mouths. My ex lost a friend at their campfire this way a few years back. Hot marshmallows can stick to the air passages like they do to hair.

  8. I love roasted marshmallow on a camp fire and hot dogs too. Food seems to taste better cooked outdoors. Cool kid.
