Looking into the sun

I came across a picture tonight I had forgotten. It was taken almost 60 years ago. It's my cousins and me and was taken near our old house in Sloss.

We were a gang back then. I'm the one to the left in the back and my cousin Regina is standing next to me. Mickey and Robby are in the front and were a few years younger. Both of them are dead now.

I'm not sure why, but most of the pictures taken in my youth were looking into the sun. I think there must have been instructions somewhere that said to do that. As a result, my face was perpetually scrunched up in most of the pictures taken of me.

  1. Aren't all kid pictures all squinting and big goofy teeth smiles?

  2. Those were the good old carefree days. Sorry your younger cousins are now gone, but glad that you are still around. You are standing in the sun because the photographer couldn't take a photo toward the sun.

  3. Yep, but them nasty shadows ain't hiding nothing. LOL
I love the old B/W shots they mean so much to the families. Most of us don't know the basics of photography, just point and shoot.
YOu were really once a little boy? Nice thinking about those days, huh?
Like the old shots, in or out of the sun,

  4. Photos capture the light of other days in film --emulsion, silver salts-- and the moment there is with us into the future. It is a fresh and enduring cross-section of life. Thanks for sharing this.

  5. I remember adults saying the best way to take a picture was with the sun at your back. That way there would not be any funny shadows in the shot.

  6. Yeah when I was a child we were told not to have the sun behind us, so we ended up looking into the sun
