Mix Tapes

There's an art to mix tapes and I'm still perfecting it. If you're making it for yourself, it's easy. But if it's for other people, it gets more challenging.
I make them for myself all the time and they consist of my favorite songs which tend to change depending upon what mood I'm in.
Most of mine will have Jimi Hendrix's version of All Along the Watchtower, songs by the Byrds, Dylan, John Prine, Peter, Paul, and Mary, Counting Crows, Van Morrison, Steve Earle, Hank Williams Sr. (not Jr.), Merle Haggard, The Wallflowers, Vertical Horizon, Sister Hazel, and many others.
But, if you're doing a tape for someone else, you have to take a totally different approach.
Jilda and I've been married since Nixon was in the White House but the mix tapes I do for her are still hit and miss.
One of my all time favorite movies, Elizebethtown, has Kerstin Dunst and Orlando Bloom. Toward the end of the move, she makes him a mix tape for his drive home back to Oregon after the death of his father.
This epitomizes the making of a mix tape.

Not sure what got me on this path tonight, but I wonder what your mix tape would have on it?

  1. My music tapes are all over the place. The only thing I really don't like is rap. But I do love an eclectic mix of just about everything else. A little more rock and roll if I'm in a good mood, a little more quiet and gentle if I'm feeling introspective.

  4. Somewhere in early motherhood, I lost track of music groups.....I think I was playing Raffi and ABC song way over the top. One thing that comes to mind is the sound track for Dan in Real Life..but my son makes really good mixes.

  5. I am with Karen when it comes to rap and other music with swear words.

I like tapes with different people singing love songs or different people singing country or different people in jazz.So when I am in the mood I have a tape with a certain kind of music done by different people. When I exercise I like to exercise to faster music so the tape I listen to would have to have a certain beat to it.
Otherwise I am very flexible.Sometimes I am into pink floyd. That music just takes me out there.Absolutely love it.

  7. I would be totally lost making a mixed tape or a tape of any kind, but if I did I would have jazz and the blues.

  8. This made me smile..Everyone at work knows I love John Denver (forgive me) and make fun of me about it. We always have music going in the OR..some docs love the hard rock (we have sirus) some the 70's, etc...When 'ol John comes on they always yell for me to come in the room...and then I always say: "Finally, some really good music!"..they hate me...(not really)
