My nephew Haven, and his friends Damon and Misty showed up with chainsaws early this morning and we made a lot of progress on our yard.
There is still a lot to do but when I got home yesterday afternoon the neighbor across the road had a massive pine laying across both his cars and his house. Another neighbor had a hundred-year-old oak through the middle of his home.
By the time I made it home my stomach churned like I'd eaten a bad burrito. A quick survey showed five huge pines in my yard. One was on my fence, one was on my chicken pen and the others were sprawled over the rest of the yard. My barn lost part of its roof, but as I walked around our house, there wasn't even a stem on the roof.
Our dogs were freaked but they were fine, and the chickens survived. Even with debris scatered all over our place, everything can be fixed. All in all, I would say we're blessed.
We still don't have power, but the power company says we'll have it by midnight tonight. We'll see.
Thanks to my sister for letting us jump on her wireless to make these updates.
We really appreciate all your kind words.

  1. Oh no! Sorry to this news. Glad your family was safe and not too much damaged.

  2. Talk about bad luck and good luck. I'm sorry you lost those beautiful trees and part of your chicken coop roof. I can only imagine how it feels to loose those giant trees. I'm glad you got some help to clean up. Glad your car and house and your chicken were spared. You'll have something to write about in your column. Hopefully you'll get your power back on soon.

  3. Holy Moly...I had no idea the weather was so bad down there. I'm glad you and Jilda are fine and hopefully your power will make it back on sooner than expected. I'm sorry your neighbor had so much damage but it sounds like you will be busy fixing you place up too. Take care and be safe! Was it a tornado or just severe thunderstorms?

  4. Wow, so sorry it's so bad there. :( I hope it is all back together soon.

  5. Oh- I am so so so sorry, Rick. Saying my prayers for you both. Take care and I hope that your power is back on soon~ xo Diana

  6. Rick, I'm so sorry to hear that you had so much damage from the storm. I know it will take time and I'm sure you both still feel a little numb. I hope things go well in your repairs and all the red tape this involves. And yes, so glad you're both okay and your animals.

  7. I'm sorry to hear about all of the damage sustained by you and your neighbors, but at least everyone is safe and unhurt, including the dogs? That's what's really important - everything else is replaceable.

  8. I'm so glad you and your family are safe. And your house is intact. We had an ugly storm early last fall that dumped a lot of heavy snow on trees still full with leaves. Lots of downed trees and power lines. We were grateful the big tree over my daughter's room didn't fall (though we did hear a crack). A big storm can sure help us understand how little control we really have in life.

Best wishes as you get everything cleaned up. I hope you got your power back.

  9. Wow, what a shocking entry here! I had no idea the weather was so bad in your area! So sorry to hear of all the damage but I'm glad you and yours are safe with little damage to your buildings.

  10. I don't watch the news anymore so I didn't know you'd had such terrible weather. I'm sorry for all the mess you have to deal with, but I'm glad you and Jilda and the pups and chickens are okay.

  11. What a storm! Didn't even know you were in harm's way.

  12. Wow! I am so sorry for you and your neighbors. I'm glad everyone is alright and you have help to clean up.

  13. I hope the power gets turned back on soon... I am happy everyone is okay...

  14. Thanks all for your kind words. We got power back on this afternoon. When the Alabama Power came back to verify that the power was on, I could have hugged his neck.
I can not say without hesitation, that there are few things in this world better than a warm shower.

  15. Oh Boy That was some candle light evening you had !!!
So scary when the wind blows like that.
Good thing you are both safe and sound.
    Take care.:0
