Talkin' Fly Fishin'

Jilda and I lunched today with a friend we hadn't seen in over 30 years. He found her on Facebook and sent a message. We had a little time and he suggested a place not far from his house to have lunch.

We left a few minutes early as we often do and arrived a little early. I'm glad we did because it is a village market that sells fresh produce, sauces, jellies,  and an eclectic array of art, toys and other interesting things.

As we headed back to the car, we saw a small fly fishing shop. As asked Jilda if she minded stepping in to look around for a moment. She didn't, and within a few moments, we'd made a new friend.

It didn't take Spencer long before he was giving Jilda casting lessons and extolling the virtues fly fishing. I think he actually talked her into going with me.

Spencer looked like the Buddha sitting on his chair near the fly-tying supplies. I pulled up a stool nearby to rest my knees and we talked for a long time.

It was a beautiful day, and she snapped this picture out front before we headed for home.

Happy Monday Y'all.

  1. I love to fish but I pretty much confine myself to a good spot under a tree on the bank. I never catch anything (and I do mean never) but it is a relaxing activity(?) to me.

  2. I have a nephew who is a fly fishing guide in Montana. I like the idea of catching fish for sport and then returning them to the water.

  3. I have always been captivated by a fly fisherman. I have even taken a couple of them out in my little foldaboat for them to get to a hard to reach 'Great fishing spot'. I have never fly fished, but it is fun watching a guy who knows how land a big one. Interesting.

Finding a long separated friend is most ALWAYS a treat.

  4. My husband grew up fly-fishing in the lochs and burns of Scotland. He doesn't fly fish here since, as he says, the thought of hooking a snake and bringing it flying back at himself isn't really appealing. He had that happen when he was trying to teach my nephew how to fly fish.
He does still tie flies to send home for his cousins.

  5. I never went fly fishing but I used a lure on the end of my hook and caught a big cat fish. Of course I was in a boat. It would be nice to know the difference between the two style of fishing. For me of course it's catching the fish that counts but for others, it's the science behind it I think.
